Severe Storms Slam Springfield, Leave Thousands Without Power
Springfield, MO — On the afternoon of June 29, 2025, powerful storms swept through Springfield, bringing intense weather and widespread damage. A multi-cluster rainband pushed southeast through the city, unleashing wind gusts exceeding 80 mph, heavy downbursts, and an abundance of cloud-to-ground lightning.
The extreme conditions caused significant disruptions, knocking out power to over 30,000 residents as multiple power lines were brought down. Much of the city’s south side experienced a complete blackout, which extended into the following day, June 30.
Numerous trees were reported to have been struck by lightning, with several catching fire, splitting, or shedding large branches. Traffic accidents were also reported during the storm, though it remains unclear if any injuries occurred.
Crews with CU Utilities are working around the clock to restore power to affected neighborhoods. Thankfully, despite the storm’s severity, no tornado activity was reported in the Greene County area.
