Boater Safety Tips:
To help prevent similar accidents, here are a few important boater safety tips to keep in mind—especially when fueling or operating watercraft:
- Turn off all engines and electrical equipment before refueling.
- Extinguish any open flames and do not smoke near the fueling area.
- Ensure all passengers are off the boat or in a safe position before fueling.
- After fueling, open all hatches and doors to ventilate and check for fuel vapors.
- Use your nose—if you smell gas, don’t start the engine. Ventilate again until the odor disappears.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.
- Regularly inspect fuel lines and tanks for leaks or corrosion.
Practicing proper safety procedures while boating can help prevent serious injuries and ensure everyone has a safe day on the water.
